Stenography vs Cryptography
Today I began my research into the subject of cryptography by reading The Code Book by Simon Singh.
One of the first things I learned was the difference between stenography and cryptography. Both are methods of transmitting messaged secretly. However, the methods which both utilize differ greatly. When one sends a message with stenography, they seek to hide the very existence of the message itself. Invisible ink and microdots are both examples of stenography.
The subject of my project is cryptography. Cryptography is also used to send a message, but instead of hiding the message completely, cryptography uses various forms of encoding to disguise the message as a different message. Cryptography is much more popular, partly due to being more compatible with digital forms of communication. I will go into more specific examples of cryptography in later posts.
