IDS: The Tritone Scale
Today as part of my IDS project, I learned about the tritone scale.
The tritone scale is also known as the Indian hexatonic scale. The tritone scale is a scale that, like its name implies, is unique for having not one, but two, tritone intervals, which creates a relatively dissonant sound.
The tritone scale is hexatonic, meaning it has 6 unique notes, and is derived from the intervals b2, 3, b5, 5, b7. It was first used in Indian Classical, and was popularized in Western music by Igor Stravinsky, who utilized it for his Petrouchka chords. Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman also frequently used it in his riffs and solos.
