IDS: Scale Notes, Key Signatures, and Seventh Chords

As part of my IDS research for today, I began to gain a technical understanding of music theory and composition using musictheory.net.

musictheory.net is a comprehensive archive of useful lessons on music theory concepts, ranging from the most basic to the most advanced. The format of their lessons is extremely concise and to the point, and in just under half an hour I learned

  • The general terms for scale notes and how they’re used for composition and making chords
  • How to calculate key signatures mathematically
  • Almost every single type of seventh chord, how to construct them, and how to use them

I already have some knowledge in music theory from my piano education, and as such, the format of the website let me skip concepts that I already covered.

To summarize, I learned vital base concepts of music theory, and discovered an ecellent resource that I’ll certainly return to.

(This post is part of a series of entries into my Learning Journey for my IDS project in Music Composition.)
